Asish Ganguly is an assistant professor at the department of Mathematics. His major research area is Applied Mathematics. Specialized areas include Quantum Mechanics (Hermitian & Non-Hermitian) and Nonlinear Dynamics.
The Change
According to him, there is a major change that was not there in 2010’s Kgp. At that time there was no appropriate accommodation facility for the professors due to which they had to face a lot of problems. But now this problem has been overcome all thanks to our new director.
Take On Our Director
Image of Kgp has improved tremendously in the eyes of India and the world. Due to the introduction of micro courses, students have a chance to try their hands in other streams also. Our present director is definitely proactive and has led to transparency between faculty and the director.
On Recent QS Rankings
He thinks the main reason behind low QS ranking of Kgp is due to the mere faculty-student ratio and also the students here are not that serious and are very less oriented towards research works. The courses should be designed in such a way that it should meet the present requirement of the students and should help them in their respective field.
Why Kgp?
Since he loved teaching and research at the same time and also wanted to stay connected to the motherland hence he decided to join IIT Kgp. But in spite of good infrastructure and resources, he finds the environment of Kgp less research friendly.
On Students of Kgp
According to him the students here are really intelligent and are at the top when we compare them to Indian standards but they still need more hard work to wave their flag higher internationally.
Money vs Research: A conundrum wrapped in an enigma
Students now-a-days are more money driven and less research oriented, the main reason behind this is our society. Our society rates everyone on the basis of their economic status. JEE is objective and according to him, this is nowhere close to the perfect way of grading a student’s actual ability but due to lack of manpower this can’t be reversed. IITs are, without any doubt, the best institution in India but due to lack of transparency in the office, institutions in countries like USA, Germany, and UK are outshining the IITs. The student-teacher interaction is much better there. Students there are more inclined towards seeking knowledge.
Students there are active in seeking all possible knowledge from the professor. In India, the courses that are taught in the class and the field in which the students do their job have almost no connection due to which they are not able to fully utilize their theoretical knowledge. Across India, the level of studies is not uniform and changes from state to state.
Time Management
According to him, he faces absolutely no problems with time management while doing both teaching and research works. After about 10-12 hours of work per week, he gets enough time to do his research and other interest related works.
Beauty Of The Campus
“Our campus is the most beautiful campus”-he said. It’s a small city in itself. There are many things that you can keep yourself busy with. It’s really close to nature and also well maintained.
His Research And His Needs
He thinks he needs a team or a group with whom he can accelerate his research works, this is how research is done in Germany, USA and Japan. He is really eager to put his foot forward in the international market for his research works. After his successful works on ‘Lamme’s Equation,’ he got the much-deserved recognition worldwide.
His experience at CINVESTAV was unforgettable.
The Message
His message to the students at Kgp is that students must maintain a good attendance in the class and must maintain discipline in the class as well as in their lives. And they should interact with their professors as professors are not only built for teaching and taking the class, they are always eager to solve student’s problems and try to provide the most righteous path for the student.
